The NBA is a sport designed for rookies to make an immediate impact. With only so many roster spots available for each team, most teams go into the NBA Draft looking to find at least one impact player, if not a superstar.

That dynamic usually leads to the NBA Rookie of the Year race being one of the sport’s most tightly contested award races.

Like all NBA award races, it’s a little bit subjective. Should the award go to the rookie who has had the best statistical season? Or the one who made key contributions to a team vying for a championship?

With all that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about the Rookie of the Year race, including NBA Rookie of the Year odds. NBA ROY odds will be available at all of our favorite NBA betting sites, all of which offer some kind of sign-up bonus for new bettors looking to register in states where sports betting is legal.

NBA Rookie of the Year Favorites 2024-2025

Jared McCain, Philadelphia 76ers (-160)

While not much has gone right for the 76ers this year, their selection of McCain with the No. 16 pick in the draft has. The rookie from Duke has averaged 16.1 points per game on 38% shooting from 3-point range.

He scored 20-plus points in seven straight games in November, including a career-high 34 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The 76ers have been horrible this season, but they should turn things around thanks to their core of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul Geroge. If the 76ers catch fire, look for McCain to be a key part of the turnaround.

But even if that doesn’t happen, McCain already has an opinion about who should win the award.

Dalton Knecht, Los Angeles Lakers (+275)

While Knecht slid to No. 17 in the draft because of his age (23) and tweener status, he caught fire in the middle of November by scoring 27 and 37 points in back-to-back games, which led to him rising on the odd boards.

He’s cooled off since, but he’s one of the best shooters in the rookie class and is likely just going through the growing pains associated with being a rookie on a LeBron James-led team.

If Knecht is able to find his groove again, he’ll be capable of shooting his way back into Rookie of the Year consideration.

Stephon Castle, San Antonio Spurs (+600)

A year after the Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, they appear to have hit on another winner with their selection of Castle with the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

He’s averaging 11.5 points and nearly four assists per game, but he must improve his shooting (.386 FG%, .281 3PM%) if he wants to make a serious run at this award.

Zaccharie Risacher, Atlanta Hawks (+1600)

The No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Risacher was always destined to make more of an impact on the game because of his size rather than his ability to stuff the stat sheet.

Risacher has played better as of late, finishing November strong and starting December hot. He’s averaging 11.6 points per game and has been shooting better recently, looking more comfortable in the NBA.

Who is Most Likely to Win Rookie of the Year NBA 2024-2025?

Jared McCain is the NBA Rookie of the Year favorite thanks to his strong start. Not only does he have the best stats of all rookies, but he’s also been the most consistent.

The 76ers have struggled, but those struggles haven’t impacted McCain’s scoring or minutes – the two things a player needs to win Rookie of the Year.

If McCain struggles, then the Lakers’ Dalton Knecht could shoot his way into consideration, but this seems like McCain’s award to lose.

With so many games happening across the NBA, it’s important to keep track of the trends and storylines surrounding the player you’re wagering on by using resources like NBA.com’s KIA Rookie Ladder or other publication’s Rookie Power Rankings.
