Kansas City Chiefs (+215)

After winning the AFC four times in the last five years, the Chiefs are favored to win the conference for the third straight season. They’re tied with the Detroit Lions for the NFL’s best record at 11-1 and are incredibly dangerous thanks to their elite defense, championship experience and the incomparable Patrick Mahomes.

Despite battling age and injuries this year, Kansas City keeps finding ways to win games and is in the driver’s seat for the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

Buffalo Bills (+215)

The Bills are getting an MVP-caliber season from Josh Allen, who has finally cleaned up the turnover issues that have plagued him throughout his career. They’ve already clinched the AFC East and are the only team to beat the Chiefs this year.

Like Baltimore, Buffalo also hasn’t been able to get over the hump / past Mahomes in the playoffs. Could this finally be the year?

Baltimore Ravens (+450)

The Ravens have five losses, but all of them were by one possession. They might be the most talented team in the NFL, especially with two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson now flanked by Offensive Player of the Year frontrunner Derrick Henry.

Baltimore boasts an elite run defense but has a poor pass defense. Pro Bowl kicker Justin Tucker has also struggled this year, leaving lots of points on the board for the Ravens and costing them multiple games.

Betting on a team to win the AFC is easy and follows the same process as betting on a team to win the Super Bowl or a player to win NFL MVP.

Simply go to your favorite sportsbook, find the “Futures” tab under the NFL section, and scroll down to AFC Champion.

Select the team you want to wager on to add them to your bet slip. Once you’ve done that, enter the amount of money you’d like to wager and press “Submit.”

Your bet will settle at the odds of the time you placed your wager. So if you bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8 at +3000 odds but their preseason odds were +2500, your wager will be paid out at +3000.

Teams will typically have plus odds to win the AFC, meaning you stand to win more money than you risk. If you bet $20 on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the AFC at +300, you stand to win $60 in profits along with your original stake.

Conference winner odds are usually half of a team’s Super Bowl odds. So if the New York Jets are +1000 to win the Super Bowl, a sportsbook will typically have them around +500 to win the AFC.

That’s because you have a 1 in 16 chance of picking a conference winner correctly compared to a 1 in 32 chance of picking the Super Bowl winner correctly.

AFC winner odds are released before the season starts but will change throughout the year based on team performance, injuries, trades and other developments.

For example, say the Cincinnati Bengals have +1200 odds to win the AFC before the season starts. If they open the year 6-0, their odds will be considerably shorter by Week 7, as they’ll have an easier path to winning the AFC.

Conversely, if the Bengals start 1-5 or Joe Burrow suffers a season-ending injury, their odds will be much longer by Week 7, as it will be much harder for them to reach the Super Bowl.

Generally speaking, the earlier you bet on a team to win the AFC, the longer the odds will be because there’s more uncertainty. Your potential payout will be higher, but there’s more risk involved because so much can change.

The longer you wait, the shorter the odds will be for a favorite. Your bet will be more likely to win, but your payout will be lower.

The AFC Championship Game doesn’t take place until late January, so keep that in mind when making your wagers. You’ll have to wait until that game is over to receive your payout, so you don’t want to tie up too much of your betting bankroll on futures bets like these, especially given how risky and hard to predict they are.

Depending on the odds, it can be a good idea to wager on a few teams before the season starts to give yourself more exposure and get longer odds. That way, you’ll still turn a profit if one of those teams wins the AFC.
