NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year History

C.J. Stroud won the 2023 award after an incredible season for the Houston Texans, becoming the first player in franchise history to win. The former Ohio State Buckeye went 9-6 as a starter with 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and the lowest interception rate (1.0%) in the NFL.

Similar to the MVP award, Offensive Rookie of the Year has become a more quarterback-driven award recently. Ten of the last 20 recipients have been signal-callers.

That’s a major shift in the history of the award. Only one quarterback — Dennis Shaw in 1970 — won in the first 37 seasons of the award from 1967 to 2003.

Running backs used to dominate the award, winning 27 times during that same 37-year span. That’s become less common, however, as the NFL has become more pass-heavy. A running back hasn’t taken home the hardware since 2018.

Similarly, only two fullbacks have won the award — both in the 1970s.

Wide receivers have become better candidates thanks to the prevalence of passing. Three of the past 10 winners have been wideouts.

For betting on this award, your best bet is to wager on a highly-drafted quarterback. Nine of the last 10 QBs to win were first-round picks, with Dak Prescott being the lone exception.

An offensive lineman or tight end has never won the award.

Three players have won Offensive Rookie of the Year unanimously, but none since 2004.

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year History

Anderson won the 2023 award, which wasn’t a major surprise. He was the preseason betting favorite after being the first defensive player drafted in April.

The Alabama product gave Houston’s defense a major boost off the edge, racking up 45 tackles, 22 QB hits and 7.0 sacks in 15 games. He flourished under first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans — a former Defensive Rookie of the Year himself.

Defensive ends have become a more popular choice for the award as pass-rushing has become more critical in the NFL. Three of the past eight winners have been defensive ends.

Similarly, cornerbacks have garnered more attention for the award, winning three of the last nine.

Linebackers used to dominate the award but have become less common over time. Only two of the last 11 winners have been linebackers after 11 of 13 winners were linebackers from 2000 to 2012.

Only two safeties have won the award, and none since 1990.

Unlike offensive linemen, defensive linemen have a decent chance of winning the award. The most recent instance of a defensive lineman winning was in 2020, and four of the last 14 winners have been defensive linemen.

Only two players have won Defensive Rookie of the Year unanimously — Micah Parsons in 2021 and George Webster (the inaugural winner) in 1967.

There’s less of a clear trend for which positions to bet on compared to offense. Generally speaking, your best bet is wagering on a highly drafted pass-rusher.

NFL Rookie of the Year Betting Tips

Regardless of whether you’re betting on the Offensive or Defensive Rookie of the Year, using the NFL Draft is a good place to start. Not only are top draft picks more talented, but they also tend to get significant playing time right away, giving them more opportunities to make an impact.

Like the NFL MVP, the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year tends to go to a quarterback. Some rookie quarterbacks don’t play much in their first year if they’re backing up a veteran, so choose one who will start right off the bat.

Ideally, the quarterback will have either some solid receiving weapons or a decent offensive line. Avoid quarterbacks on truly terrible teams who are set up to fail, such as Bryce Young on the Carolina Panthers.

Choosing a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate is trickier, but going with a cornerback is usually a safe bet given the pass-heavy nature of the modern NFL.

Like all futures bets, these awards are tough to predict and don’t pay out until the season ends. Accordingly, we recommend spreading out smaller bets across a few top candidates with plus odds.

NFL Rookie of the Year Voting Process

Similar to other major NFL awards, the Rookie of the Year awards are both voted on by a panel of 50 members of the Associated Press.

The Offensive Rookie of the Year has been chosen since 1957, while the defensive version of the award was introduced in 1967.

Ballots are cast at the end of the regular season, so playoff performance isn’t a factor in the voting.

The award results are announced during the week before the Super Bowl, so your bets won’t cash until then.
