It took Kansas some time to legalize sports betting after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May 2018. After years of legislative debate, Governor Laura Kelly signed SB 84 in May 2022. The bill went into law on July 1, 2022.

Sports betting went live in the state two months later with a soft launch on Sept. 1, 2022, followed by a full launch one week later on Sept. 8. Kansas bettors now have several in-person and online options to wager on their favorite teams, including the state’s professional and college teams.

With Kansas potentially set to add more sports betting sites in the future, here’s a look at the growing sports betting scene in the Sunflower State.

Kansas Sports Betting Sites

There are six online sportsbooks operating in Kansas, although there are plans to possibly expand that number up to 12 in the future.

  • BetMGM: BetMGM launched in Kansas when sports betting first went live and is partnered with Kansas Crossing Casino.
  • FanDuel Sportsbook: One of the biggest names in North American sports betting thanks to its cutting-edge mobile app, FanDuel also has a retail sportsbook at Kansas Star Casino.
  • DraftKings Sportsbook: DraftKings rivals FanDuel in terms of popularity and betting markets. It was one of the state’s first sportsbooks and has a retail location at Boot Hill Casino.
  • Caesars Sportsbook: Known for its loyalty program and extensive odds boosts, Caesars is partnered with Kansas Crossing Casino.
  • Fanatics Sportsbook: One of the latest sportsbooks on the market, Fanatics debuted in Kansas in March 2024 after rebranding from PointsBet.
  • ESPN BET: Another newer sportsbook, ESPN’s sports betting site launched in Kansas when it debuted in November 2023.

Legal Sports Betting Age

Like most states, Kansas requires sports bettors to be at least 21 years old. The minimum age is 18 in some states, but it’s 21 in Kansas.

Online sportsbooks verify your age by confirming your identity when you sign up, including your date of birth. If you’re under 21, you won’t be able to sign up for a sportsbook or place a legal sports bet in Kansas.

Professional Sports Teams in Kansas

Kansas shares several professional sports teams with Missouri due to Kansas City’s location on the Kansas-Missouri border.

  • Kansas City Chiefs

A charter member of the American Football League, the Chiefs were founded in 1959 and played their first game in 1960. Originally the Dallas Texans, they relocated to Kansas City in 1963 after winning the 1962 AFL Championship.

Kansas City lost the first Super Bowl ever played against the Green Bay Packers but won its first title three years later in Super Bowl IV. It took the Chiefs 50 years to return to the Big Game and win another championship, but they have won three of the last five Super Bowls under superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid.

  • Kansas City Royals

The Royals debuted as an expansion franchise in 1969, replacing the Athletics after they moved to Oakland. Kansas City emerged as one of the American League’s best teams during the late 1970s and early 1980s, forming a fierce rivalry with the New York Yankees.

The Royals struggled for three decades after winning their first World Series title in 1985 before claiming their second championship in 2015. Their most famous player is Hall of Famer George Brett, who won three batting titles and an MVP award during his 21-year career with Kansas City.

  • Sporting Kansas City

Kansas City’s MLS club was founded in 1995 by Lamar Hunt (who also founded the Chiefs) and began playing in 1996 as a charter member of the league. The team moved to a new stadium in 2010 and changed its name from the Kansas City Wizards.

The club won the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013. It also won the U.S. Open Cup in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017 along with the Supporters’ Shield in 2000.

College Teams in Kansas

Kansas also has three high-profile Division I schools that bettors can wager on.

  • Kansas Jayhawks

The Jayhawks compete in the Big 12 and have been playing football since 1890. They’ve had mixed results on the gridiron, losing more games than they’ve won but winning nine conference titles and seven bowl games.

The Jayhawks have had far more success on the hardwood, building one of the most successful college basketball programs in the country. A four-time national champion and six-time runner-up, Kansas has won the most conference titles in the nation and holds the record for most consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (28), which it accomplished from 1990 to 2017.

The Jayhawks’ first basketball coach was James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.

  • Kansas State Wildcats

Known as “K-State,” the Wildcats also compete in the Big 12. They’ve had more success than Kansas on the gridiron, winning seven conference titles and 12 bowl games. In 2022, the Wildcats won the Big 12 and made their first Sugar Bowl appearance.

Kansas State has yet to win a national championship in basketball but finished runner-up in 1951. The Wildcats have made four Final Four appearances and recently made it to the Elite Eight in 2023. They’ve also won 19 regular-season conference crowns and two conference tournaments.

  • Wichita State Shockers

The Shockers compete in the AAC but do not have a football team, making them the only member of the FBS without one. The program was cut in 1986 but is known for producing legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells.

The men’s basketball team has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances but has never won a national championship. The Shockers have made several deep tournament runs, reaching the Final Four twice, the Elite Eight four times and the Sweet 16 six times. They’ve also won four conference tournaments.
