Maryland officially legalized sports betting in May 2021 when Governor Larry Hogan signed HB 940 into law. While retail sports betting went live in December 2021, online sports betting was delayed for a year and a half, finally launching in November 2022.

Maryland sports bettors now have access to several online sportsbooks along with a number of retail sportsbooks if they prefer to bet in person, giving them plenty of options to wager on their favorite teams like the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens.

Maryland Sports Betting Sites

There are 11 online sportsbooks operating in Maryland with a 12th (Bally Bet) expected to launch soon.

  • Betfred: Betfred has a retail location at Long Shot’s — an off-track betting location in Frederick.
  • BetMGM: In addition to its top-notch mobile app, BetMGM also has a brick-and-mortar location at MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino in Oxon Hill.
  • betPARX: betParx has a physical location at Canton Crossing in Baltimore and plans to open another location in Towson soon.
  • BetRivers: A national brand with a local feel, BetRivers is a solid option for Maryland bettors.

  • ESPN BET: One of the newest sportsbooks on this list, ESPN BET launched in late 2023 after rebranding from Barstool Sportsbook.
  • SuperBook: SuperBook operates a bar/restaurant at Orioles Park at Camden Yards.

Legal Sports Betting Age

The legal sports betting age in Maryland is 21, which is true for most states with legal sports betting. If you’re under 21 and try to sign up for a sportsbook in Maryland, you won’t be able to register.

Sportsbooks confirm your age when you sign up by verifying your identity along with your date of birth.

That age limit applies to in-person gambling as well, so you need to be 21 or older to bet at a retail sportsbook or enter a casino in Maryland. However, you only need to be 18 to bet on horse racing, DFS or the lottery.

Professional Sports Teams in Maryland

Maryland is home to several popular professional sports franchises that the state’s bettors can wager on. They can also bet on nearby teams in Washington, D.C.

  • Baltimore Orioles

Previously the St. Louis Browns, the franchise changed its name to the Orioles when it relocated to Baltimore in 1954. The Orioles enjoyed much of their success under Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver, winning three World Series and six American League pennants from 1966 to 1983.

Baltimore has had only brief periods of success in the four decades since then, although Cal Ripken Jr. setting the MLB record for most consecutive games played was a highlight. Led by a new core, a stacked farm system and a new ownership group, the Orioles are on the upswing and appear poised to dominate the rest of the 2020s.

  • Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens played their first season in 1996 but quickly established themselves as one of the NFL’s best-run organizations. They won their first Super Bowl during the 2000 season and have been perennial contenders ever since.

Baltimore won another Super Bowl during the 2012 season thanks to Joe Flacco’s sensational postseason performance. They haven’t made it back to the Big Game since then despite having two-time MVP Lamar Jackson under center.

  • Washington Commanders

The Commanders play at Commanders Field in Landover, Maryland, outside of Washington D.C. Founded in 1932 in Boston, they decamped in 1937 and have played in the D.C. area ever since.

Most of the team’s success came during a 10-year run from 1982 to 1991 when Washington won all three of its Super Bowl titles. Saddled with poor ownership for many years, the Commanders have not made it past the Divisional Round since then.

College Teams in Maryland

Maryland also has a number of notable college teams that sports bettors can wager on. However, betting on college sports prop bets is not allowed in Maryland.

  • Maryland Terrapins

The Terrapins, known as the “Terps,” belong to the Big Ten Conference. They joined the Big Ten after 62 years as a founding member of the ACC.

The University of Maryland football team dates back to 1892 and has had mixed success over the years. The Terps won their only national title on the gridiron in 1953 and claimed nine ACC championships before joining the Big Ten — third-most in conference history.

The Terps also have a national championship in basketball, cutting down the nets in 2002 after losing in the Final Four the previous year. Much of their success came under head coach Gary Williams, who coached the program from 1989 to 2011.

  • Navy Midshipmen

The Midshipmen play for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Their top rival is Army (West Point), who they play every year in the famous Army-Navy Game.

Navy plays in the Patriot League for most sports, but its football team plays in the AAC. The school won its only national championship in football in 1926 but produced a pair of Heisman winners during the 1960s — Joe Bellino in 1960 and Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach in 1963.

Navy’s basketball team has had some success as well with 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Elite Eight. However, the Midshipmen have not qualified for March Madness since 1998.
