Professional Sports Teams in Michigan

- Detroit Lions
Much of the Lions’ history has been defined by futility, as they’re the only franchise that has played for the entire Super Bowl era without reaching the Big Game. They did win four championships before the Super Bowl era but have had sparse success since the late 1950s, recently going more than 30 years between playoff victories.
- Detroit Red Wings
One of the NHL’s “Original Six” franchises, the Red Wings were founded in 1926. They have won 11 Stanley Cups, which is third-most in NHL history and the most of any team based in the U.S. Their last win came in 2008 in the midst of 25 straight postseason appearances.
- Detroit Pistons
Founded in 1937, the Pistons merged with the NBA in 1949. They relocated from Fort Wayne to Detroit in 1957 and have had their share of ups and downs, winning three championships but also enduring long stretches of mediocrity.

They’ve also won a game in two of the three NCAA Tournaments they’ve appeared in, with the most recent coming in 2003 when they defeated Creighton in the first round of the tournament.
- Detroit Mercy Titans
The Titans compete in the Horizon League and have advanced to six NCAA Tournaments. Their best finish came in 1977 when they made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. They’ve fallen on hard times lately, however, going 1-31 in the 2023-24 season.
- Eastern Michigan Eagles
The Eagles fielded their football team in 1891 and have had five undefeated seasons. They’ve won 10 conference championships, although only one of them has come since 1957.

The Wolverines played in the first-ever bowl game (the 1902 Rose Bowl) and have won 12 National Championships, most recently during the 2023 season when coach Jim Harbaugh led the team to an undefeated record.
On the hardwood, the Wolverines have won one NCAA Tournament along with three NITs (one of which was vacated due to NCAA violations). Their NCAA Tournament championship came in 1989 and they finished as runner-up in 2013 and 2018.

The Spartans have claimed six National Championships on the gridiron and have won 11 conference championships. They made it to the NCAA Playoff in 2015, which is also the last year they won the Big Ten.
The Spartans have won two NCAA Tournaments, with their last title coming in 2000. Their 1979 championship win, which featured MSU’s Magic Johnson going against Indiana State’s Larry Bird, was one of the most-watched basketball games of all time. They’ve had a lot of success recently, making 26 straight NCAA Tournaments since 1998 under coach Tom Izzo.
- Oakland Golden Grizzlies
The Golden Grizzlies’ best season on the hardwood came in 1997 when they reached the Sweet Sixteen in Division II—the year before they began transitioning to Division I. They’ve made four NCAA Tournaments since then, with their best showing coming in 2024 when they upset No. 3 seed Kentucky in the first round.
- Western Michigan Broncos
The Broncos have won four conference titles on the gridiron and played in 11 bowl games. They hold the distinction of playing bowl games in three different nations, as they played in the National Bowl in Toronto in 2007 and the Bahamas Bowl in 2015. They went undefeated in 2017 and played in the Cotton Bowl as the Group of Five’s representative in a New Year’s Six bowl.
The Broncos have made four NCAA Tournaments, with their last appearance coming in 2014. Their lone NCAA Tournament win came in 1976. They’ve played in the NIT three times, the CBI once and the CIT twice.
