Other than Nevada, there’s perhaps no state friendlier to bettors than New Jersey. On June 11, 2018, it became the first state outside of Nevada to legalize sports betting, less than a month after the Supreme Court deemed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) unconstitutional.
Online sports betting went live in the state later that summer, allowing bettors to easily wager on the many professional sports teams based there and in neighboring New York.
The state quickly became a sports bettor’s dream with numerous betting sites. There are also a number of retail sportsbooks for bettors who prefer to wager in person, most of which are located in Atlantic City.
Here’s what to know about sports betting in the Garden State.

New Jersey’s legal sports betting age is 21, which is true for most states with legal sports betting. If you’re under 21 and try to sign up for a sportsbook in New Jersey, you won’t be able to register.
Sportsbooks confirm your age when you sign up by verifying your identity with your Social Security Number and date of birth.
The age limit applies to in-person betting as well, so you need to be 21 or older to bet at any of New Jersey’s retail sportsbooks or casinos.
Professional Sports Teams in New Jersey
New Jersey is home to several professional sports teams.
- New Jersey Devils
The Devils moved to New Jersey from Colorado in 1982 and became one of the NHL’s best teams during the 1990s and 2000s. They went only three seasons without a playoff appearance from 1988 to 2012, winning three Stanley Cups during that span and making two other Finals appearances.
- New York Giants
The Giants play in East Rutherford at MetLife Stadium, which they share with the Jets.
Established in 1925, the Giants have won eight NFL championships, including four Super Bowls. Their best season was in 1986, when they went 14-2 in the regular season en route to their first Super Bowl victory.
The Giants won their second title four years later, then capped the 2007 and 2011 campaigns by upsetting Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the Big Game. Their only Super Bowl loss came during the 2000 season to the Baltimore Ravens.
- New York Jets
The Jets also play at MetLife Stadium but haven’t had nearly as much success as the Giants. Their only Super Bowl win came at the end of the 1968 season when Broadway Joe Namath led them to the biggest upset in Super Bowl history over the Baltimore Colts. The Jets haven’t been back to the Big Game since.
- New York Red Bulls
An inaugural member of MLS, the Red Bulls lost their only MLS Cup Finals appearance to the Columbus Crew in 2008. They’ve won three regular-season Supporters’ Shields and finished runner-up in the U.S. Open Cup twice.
- NJ/NY Gotham FC
A founding member of the NWSL, Gotham FC was founded in 2006 and plays at Red Bull Arena in Harrison. It won a Women’s Professional Soccer championship in 2009 and an NWSL championship in 2023.

The Hawks compete in the FCS in football and first fielded a team in 1993. They’ve won seven conference championships.

The Tigers also made history on the hardwood, as the “Princeton Offense” (now known as the motion offense) is one of the most popular offenses in basketball. The Tigers’ best season in the modern era came in 2023 when they made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
- Rider Broncs
The Broncs compete in the MAAC in basketball and have made it to three NCAA Tournaments, though they have yet to win a game. Their best season came in 1957 when they made it to the Elite Eight of the Division II NCAA Tournament.

Their men’s basketball team’s best season came in 1976 when they advanced to the Final Four but lost to Michigan. They’ve made six NCAA Tournament appearances since.

Another recent NCAA Tournament darling, the Peacocks put together a Cinderella run to the Elite Eight in the 2022 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed. They compete in the MAAC.
