While Washington first legalized sports betting in March 2020, it didn’t go live in the state until Sept. 9, 2021, when sports betting launched at the Snoqualmie Casino.

While the market has grown in the state since then, Washington is a bit unique in that it only allows bets to be placed in-person at the state’s casinos.

Here’s what you need to know about sports betting in the Evergreen State.

Washington Sports Betting Sites

The Snoqualmie Casino’s mobile sportsbook app is the only mobile sports betting site in Washington. You can only access the app if you’re at the Snoqualmie Casino and complete the following steps:

  • Visit the Snoqualmie Casino Box Office from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
  • Show valid photo identification.
  • Show your Crescent Club membership card. If you don’t have a Crescent Club membership, you can sign up for free at the casino’s Crescent Club Booth.
  • Complete a W-9 with your Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number.
  • Accept the sportsbook’s terms and conditions.
  • From there, you can fund your account using cash at the sportsbook.

The app can only be used while located within the boundaries of the Snoqualmie Casino. If you try to use it anywhere else, it won’t work.

There are dozens of casinos and 14 retail sportsbooks in Washington, but Snoqualmie is the lone sportsbook with a mobile app.

Legal Sports Betting Age

The legal sports betting age is 21 in Washington, which is the case for most states across the country. You can gamble at a casino if you’re 18, but you need to be at least 21 to legally wager at one of the state’s sportsbooks.

Oregon is Washington’s only border state with legalized sports betting, and its legal betting age is also 21.

Professional Sports Teams in Washington

There are four professional sports teams in Washington.

  • Seattle Kraken

The newest professional sports team in Washington, the Kraken joined the NHL as an expansion team before the 2021-22 season. They first qualified for the playoffs in their second season and advanced to the second round, where they lost to the Dallas Stars in seven games.

They’re the first Seattle team to compete for a Stanley Cup since the Seattle Metropolitans. The Metropolitans won the Stanley Cup in 1917 but ceased operations in 1924.

  • Seattle Mariners

While the Mariners joined MLB in 1977, they didn’t field their first winning team until 1991. Led by superstars Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez and Ichiro Suzuki, Seattle was a perennial contender throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, tying an MLB record with 116 regular-season wins in 2001.

The Mariners have yet to reach the World Series, however, making them one of only five MLB franchises without a championship.

  • Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1976 but didn’t fully hit their stride until the 2000s, making their first Super Bowl appearance during the 2005 season.

Seattle continued its success in the 2010s with head coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson, making back-to-back Super Bowls during the 2013 and 2014 campaigns. The Seahawks won the first one but were unable to repeat, losing on Wilson’s infamous goal-line interception against the New England Patriots the following year.

  • Seattle Sounders FC

An expansion team that joined MLS in 2009, the Sounders have quickly become one of the league’s premier teams. They won the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019 and have won the U.S. Open Cup four times. They qualified for the playoffs every year from 2009 to 2022, which was then the longest postseason streak in league history.

They were also the first team to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup and have rostered USMNT stars like Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris and DeAndre Yedlin.

College Teams in Washington

Washington has a strong college sports scene as well with several nationally recognized programs.

  • Eastern Washington Eagles

The Eagles play in the Big Sky Conference of the FCS and play at Roos Field, the only stadium in college football with a red playing surface. They won the FCS Championship in 2010 with a 20-19 win over Delaware and won six Big Sky Conference titles in the 2010s.

On the hardwood, the Eagles also play in the Big Sky. They have made three NCAA Tournaments and have won six conference championships.

  • Gonzaga Bulldogs

One of college basketball’s best mid-major programs, the Bulldogs made the Elite Eight for the first time in 1999, kicking off an incredible run for the program. Gonzaga has been in the NCAA Tournament every year since 1999 and reached the National Championship Game twice, losing in both 2017 and 2021.

  • Seattle Redhawks

The Redhawks were a Division I program from 1946 to 1980 before reclassifying as an NAIA program due to budget cuts. They then rose to a Division II program before becoming a Division I team again in 2008.

Seattle was the NCAA Tournament runner-up in 1958 but hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since reclassifying as a Division I program.

  • Washington Huskies

One of two Power Five schools in the state, the Huskies previously played in the Pac-12 before moving to the Big Ten in the 2024 season.

The Huskies’ football team was a charter member of the Pac-12 before joining the Big Ten. They’ve won one National Championship and eight Rose Bowls. They also made it to the 2024 National Championship Game, where they lost to Michigan.

On the hardwood, the Huskies appeared in eight NCAA Tournaments from 1999 to 2019. Their highlight from that time was producing Markelle Fultz, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

  • Washington State Cougars

The Cougars’ football team has been around since 1895, winning four conference championships. They won a Pac-12 North division championship in 2018 under legendary head coach Mike Leach and will remain a member of the Pac-12 in 2024.

As of 2024, the Cougars have made seven NCAA Tournaments, with their best season coming in 1941 when they finished runner-up. Their most notable alumni is Klay Thompson, who has won four NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors and is one of the best shooters in NBA history.
