The Los Angeles Angels look to gain more ground in the NL West with a win on Thursday to clinch a series win against the division-leading Texas Rangers. Both teams have been pleasant surprises this season, with the Rangers’ offseason acquisitions paying off and the Angels finally playing up to their talent level.
Many expected the Halos to miss the playoffs and lose out on the future of Shohei Ohtani (5-2, 3.32 ERA), but they are 5.5 games out of first place and, with a win tonight, would take this series 3-1 from Texas on its home field.
With Ohtani making a start on Thursday, you’d assume Los Angeles has a great chance to steal another game from the AL West leaders. But Ohtani continues to be shaky on the mound and is coming off back-to-back rough starts after it appeared he had turned a corner at the end of May.
Ohtani got lit up by the Houston Astros two weeks ago, allowing four earned runs in six innings. Similarly, Ohtani struggled against the Seattle Mariners last week with three earned runs in five innings. His control was clearly off as he walked five batters and surrendered a homer.
The Texas lineup, meanwhile, has solid career numbers against Ohtani with a .250 batting average and a .726 OPS in 92 all-time at-bats. They aren’t earth-shattering numbers, but against an elite arm like Ohtani, they are better than most teams can boast.
His work on the mound may be ugly this month, but Ohtani is crushing it at the plate with a .423 average and six home runs in 52 at-bats.
On the other side, veteran Nathan Eovaldi (9-2, 2.49 ERA) looks renewed in his first season with Texas. He sports a 0.98 WHIP with 83 strikeouts in 86 ⅔ innings of work and has given up just five runs over his last four starts combined. Not surprisingly, the Rangers are 4-0 in those outings.
Looking at LA’s lineup, Gio Urshela has the most success against Eovaldi with a .350 average and two extra-base hits in 20 career plate appearances. He is also the only Angel to have a home run against the righty.
Best Bet: Angels vs. Rangers
Ohtani’s recent struggles aside, he and Eovaldi have been two of the best pitchers in baseball this year. They both miss a good number of bats and are capable of pitching deep into this game, setting up a terrific pitcher’s duel.
It’s surprising to see the Under listed at plus odds on DraftKings. This should be a low-scoring game with limited offense on both sides.
Accordingly, we recommend taking the Under at +100 odds. A winning $100 bet would return $100 in profits along with your original stake.
Same-Game Parlay
This type of wager allows you to combine two or more bets from the same event into a single play. The advantage is that the odds for the combined wager are higher than betting all plays separately. For more information, check out our same-game parlay overview.
Here’s the trio of MLB prop bets we have chosen for this game:
- Anthony Rendon 1+ Hits (-230)
- Shohei Ohtani 2+ Walks (-195)
- Shohei Ohtani 8+ Strikeouts (+100)
After combining these three bets into a same-game parlay, the odds jump to +350. That would be good for a $350 profit on a $100 winning bet.
We kick off our same game parlay with a wager on Anthony Rendon to record a hit on Thursday night. While he’s only hitting .074 this month, Rendon has strong career numbers against Eovaldi with a .276 average and more walks than strikeouts in 29 at-bats. It feels like a good night for Rendon to snap out of his slump and get back to business at the plate.
The second leg of our SGP is betting on Ohtani to issue multiple walks. As mentioned, he issued five free passes in his most recent outing, which matched his season-high. He’s now allowed multiple free passes in 10 of 13 starts this year and has the highest walk rate of his career at 4.0 BB/9, so bet on that trend to continue.
Our parlay’s third and final leg is for Ohtani to notch at least eight strikeouts. He’s hit this mark in two of his last four outings and is averaging 7.8 K’s per start this year. Assuming Ohtani goes deep into the game to match Eovaldi, he’ll have a good chance to hit this prop for the eighth time in 14 starts.
