A pair of AL West rivals collide on Friday when the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners kick off a three-game weekend tilt. The Mariners are coming off a pounding at the hands of the San Diego Padres on Wednesday while the Angels are coming off a sweep of the Chicago Cubs.
The Halos are on a four-game winning streak and look to keep their momentum going on Friday with superstar Shohei Ohtani (5-2, 3.30 ERA) taking the mound against Luis Castillo (4-3, 2.25 ERA).
Ohtani’s struggles on the mound continued after getting blown up by the Houston Astros last Friday with five earned runs over six innings. Shotime coughed up two home runs and tallied six strikeouts against one walk. He was relatively inefficient as well with 107 pitches on the night.
Ohtani is 0-1 in his last three starts with a 3.50 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and seven walks in 18 innings. He’s also leading the major leagues in wild pitches (10) and hit batters (eight).
Despite his recent issues on the mound, Ohtani has had several dominant starts against Seattle during his time in the league. In 78 total plate appearances, the Mariners are hitting just .179 against Ohtani with a .495 OPS and 23 strikeouts compared to five walks.
More good news for Ohtani are his home and away splits that favor him pitching at Angels Stadium. He is much better at home with a 3-1 record and a 2.31 ERA there this season.
Home runs remain a significant issue for Ohtani, however, with four multi-HR games in his previous seven starts.
It’s not all bad news for Ohtani, though, as his numbers at the plate are on the rise. He is hitting .310 in June with four homers in his previous eight games.
On the flip side, Castillo has been fantastic this season despite an unimpressive 4-3 record in 12 starts. He had a rough patch at the start of May but has been better lately, allowing one run or less in three straight starts.
The issue for the Mariners isn’t Castillo but their awful start to the month with a 2-6 record in their last eight games. The rest of their pitching staff has been atrocious with 39 runs allowed in their previous four games.
Best Bet: Mariners vs. Angels
As much as we’d like to fade Ohtani amid his recent struggles on the mound, the Mariners are playing so poorly that siding with Seattle makes little sense. Instead, we will shoot our shot with the Halos to win outright at reasonable moneyline odds of -125.
The AL West rivals are heading in different directions with the Halos streaking and the Mariners stumbling.
At DraftKings Sportsbook’s odds, a winning $100 bet on the Under would pay $80 in profit plus the return of your initial $100 wager.
Same-Game Parlay
This type of wager allows you to combine two or more bets from the same event into a single play. The advantage is that the odds for the combined wager are higher than betting all plays separately. For more information, check out our same-game parlay overview.
Here’s the trio of MLB prop bets we have chosen for this game:
- Julio Rodriguez Under 0.5 Hits (+140)
- Shohei Ohtani Over 7.5 Strikeouts (-135)
- Shohei Ohtani to Record a Win (+150)
After combining these three bets into a same-game parlay, the odds jump to +621. That would be good for a $620.98 profit on a $100 winning bet.
We start our same game parlay on Julio Rodriguez going hitless tonight. J-Rod is a talented hitter but has never gotten on base against Ohtani, going 0-for-8 against him in his young career. Rodriguez is dealing with a season-long lull at the plate and we don’t expect him to find his stroke against the Angels.
The second leg of our prop is on Ohtani to go over this strikeout total of 7.5. He’s recently burned us a few times on this prop, but the Mariners rank 28th in strikeouts per game with 9.7. This lineup is ideal for Ohtani to get back on track against, and the 7.5 line is too attractive for a guy who ranks third in the MLB in K’s.
The third and final leg of Friday’s parlay is for Ohtani to notch a win. He has not won a game since May 15 but matches up well against a slumping M’s lineup. Ohtani is one of the most talented pitchers in the world and won’t stay down long.
