There’s daylight between the Yankees and their pursuers now, following a series win over the Tampa Bay Rays last weekend. The Yanks’ division lead is back up to 5.5 games with 21 games to play. Almost as satisfying for Yankee fans are the 20 runs the team scored in its last two games. Something breathed life back into the Bombers, who were hitting more like the popguns for a month.
Boston played spoiler against Baltimore last weekend, taking two of three to hamper the Orioles’ playoff chances. That’s all the Sox are left with: the satisfaction of irritating their division rivals. They have six games with the Yankees over the next 12 days, giving them a dozen chances to ruin things for their bitter enemies.
- Boston has been outscored 78-54 by the Yankees this season.
- The Yankees lead the season series, 7-6.
- Boston is 4-3 against the Yankees at Fenway.
- The Red Sox are 6-1 in their last seven games at home.
Starting Pitchers
Gerrit Cole (11-7, 3.20 ERA, 218 Ks) vs. Nick Pivetta (9-11, 4.29 ERA, 148 Ks)
Manager Aaron Boone got a gift on Sunday when his hitters put up crooked numbers in the first two innings to stake the team to a nine-run lead. That enabled Boone to utilize a succession of relief pitchers in a blowout victory.
Because of a rainout, the Yankees were starting Domingo German on short rest, and with a big lead, he only had to throw one inning as an “opener.” With a day off on Monday, Boone has a well-rested pitching staff to face the rival Red Sox.
Ace Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for New York, coming off one of his best starts of the season (14 Ks in 6 ⅔ innings against the Twins on Sept. 7). The big right-hander has a 2.93 ERA since August 1, and he’s struck out 10.9 batters per nine over that span. Most importantly for Boone: The team has won two of Cole’s last three starting assignments.
One thing that’s been true much of the time in 2022 for Nick Pivetta: His teammates have scored a lot of runs when he starts. Not so his last time on the mound, when the lineup was shutout in a 1-0 loss to the Rays.
Pivetta is little more than a 12-15 out guy, so the Red Sox will have the bullpen up a lot in this game. This will be his fourth start against the Yankees in 2022.
Hot Hitters
Injuries and inconsistent run scoring is what led to the Yankees lead shrinking from 14 games to 3 1/2 games from July 13 to September 9. Only the powerful bat of Aaron Judge kept the Yankees from an epic collapse. The offense might be back in step after two big games over the weekend.
- Gleyber Torres hit a pair of homers on Sunday, and he has three HR and seven RBI in his last six games.
- Aaron Judge is hitting .429 and has reached base 16 times in his last six games.
- Oswald Peraza may not be the next Derek Jeter, but all the Yankees want from their top shortstop prospect is for him to be 85% Jeter down the stretch. The kid has five hits in his last three games, and he’s already proven he’s as good as Jeter ever was in the field.
- League batting leader Zander Bogaerts is hitting .471 since Sept. 1, with 16 hits in nine games.
Our Best Bet Today
- New York Yankees -2.5 (+154 via FanDuel Sportsbook)
In three starts against the Yankees this season, Pivetta has an 11.50 ERA. The Yankees have slugged six homers off Pivetta. In a sense, this might be batting practice for a New York team that saw its offense surge to life on Saturday and Sunday.
Our Same-Game Parlay
Our same-game parlay for the Rays-Yankees game would pay $1,026 if both legs hit. These odds are from the FanDuel sports betting app.
- Josh Donaldson To Hit a Home Run (+360)
- Aaron Judge To Record Two Or More Hits (+160)
Donaldson would be a beast in Fenway, with his philosophy of pulling the inside fastball at all costs. The Yankee slugger has three homers against Pivetta in only 24 plate appearances. We like Judge against Pivetta, too: He has a .375 average with an HR versus the Boston starter.
