Every sport has its championship. In the NFL, it’s the Super Bowl. For college basketball, it’s the NCAA Tournament. For MLB teams, all eyes are on winning the World Series

A similar competition can be found in Hollywood. While creating a major motion picture is different from competing in a professional sports league, directors and actors usually want to be among the best at their craft—unless you’re Marlon Brando.

For Hollywood filmmakers, that feeling is solidified by winning an Oscar. And, like a sports championship, bettors in some states can bet on which films and actors will win an Oscar.

Oscars Time & Date

The Oscars, which are also known as the Academy Awards, are given to films in recognition of excellence in cinematic achievement. This year’s ceremony is at 7 p.m. ET on March 10.

It will air on ABC.

It’s the oldest worldwide entertainment awards ceremony. The first Oscars Ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, and was broadcast on the radio. The first televised ceremony was in 1953.

Can You Bet on the Oscars?

Yes, but only in specific states. As of 2024, the states where you can bet on the Oscars are New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Indiana, Arizona, Kansas and Louisiana.

Most sports betting states don’t allow wagering on the event.

New Jersey became the first state to allow Oscars betting in 2019 before Indiana in 2020. Michigan allowed it in 2021 before Louisiana and Colorado in 2022. Massachusetts and Kansas followed in 2023. More states will follow the trend.

What Oscars Bets Can You Make?

Depending on the jurisdiction, you can bet on all 23 award categories at:

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • BetMGM
  • Bet365
  • Caesars

Most betting revolves around the six major categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

In 2023, Everything, Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture along with winning Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Screenplay and Best Director (Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan).

Brendan Fraser (The Whale) won Best Actor.

You can only bet on who will win each category (the equivalent of a moneyline wager). There are no spread or total bets. Some sportsbooks let you form a parlay of award winners.
